Monte Argentario

A pearl between sky and sea

Monte Argentario was probably originally an island subsequently 'anchored' to the Tyrrhenian coast by the Feniglia and Giannella tombolos, formed by the accumulation of debris carried by rivers and sea currents.

Exploring the peaks of Argentario

Due to its geographical position in the centre of the Tyrrhenian Sea, Argentario was considered a safe harbour by the first navigators. Of extraordinary strategic value, the Promontory was equipped with watchtowers and signal towers to face the constant danger of incursions from the sea. The very first defensive works date back to the Bronze Age, but a real defensive system covering the entire coastline of the Promontory only began to take shape in the 15th century, under the rule of the Republic of Siena.

The promontory, entirely mountainous (635 m) and characterised by high, rocky coastlines, where you can admire the famous dwarf palm that grows spontaneously on the site, is covered in dense Mediterranean scrub, which alternates with the cultivation of olive trees, vines and fruit trees.

With the Roman conquest, the locality is probably included as a prey in a large landholding. It then passed to the Enobarbi Domizi family, professionally known as “Argentarii”, i.e. money lenders, who had obtained the whole Promontorio, later called “Argentariorum Mons”, i.e. Monte degli Argentari, as a settlement of the debts paid to the Republic during the II Punic War.
